The Dragon Ride is the largest cycling event in Wales and the largest of its kind in the UK. The event is based on a format that has become very popular in France and Italy during the nineties, essentially a road cycling marathon held over a mountainous route. The first Dragon Ride was held in 2004 and was based at the Recreation Centre in Bridgend. One of only three events of its kind in the UK, the inaugural ride had an entry of 280 riders. A challenging route of just over 100 miles took the hardy entrants over the most challenging climbs in South Wales, The Bwlch, Rhigos and Brecon Beacons. The ride has grown in popularity dramatically each year with the 2010 event sold 3000 places in just ten days and a further 300 entries were filled within seven minutes of their release, unprecedented within UK cycling. Entries to the event are now closed with 3500 riders entered.
