Mari Llwyd

Mari Llwyd, originally uploaded by Tourism Bridgend.
The Christmas festival which takes place in Llangynwyd called 'Mari Lwyd' has now passed from truth into the realms of legend and folklore and no one can remember when the custom started. It's name was once thought to be connected to the Biblical story of ‘Holy Mary’ as originally the event was a religious festival. The event also includes a large group of men and boys who carry flaming wooden torches, touring the streets of the village and knocking on the doors of houses requesting entrance and hospitality. This would involve a lot of comedy and singing.
